inspiration + motivation

This project emerged during the pandemic to help us cope with the disruption and grief in all of our lives, at work and at home.

We wish to welcome you into our world and widen the circles of participation via storytelling and imagining rehabilitation futures that can accommodate all our unique strengths and challenges.

The individuals behind the scenes, as well as the contributors and participants to the project, represent a diverse group of experts from academia, industry, healthcare, and the community at large.

Each and every one of us has the capacity to motivate and inspire someone else through their stories and advice.

Each and every one of us is an expert at navigating the obstacles in our lives.

We invite you to contribute and widen the circles of participation.

the interviews

We began by interviewing SensoriMotor Assessment and Rehabilitation Training in Virtual Reality Center (SMART-VR) members at the University of Southern California (USC) (directorate and advisory) and asking our production team and interviewees to nominate others.

Our production team generated slightly different sets of questions for interviewees from different professional and community roles.

Interviewees participated over email and videoconferencing.

Interviews are presented in excerpts or in their entirety at the production team's discretion to maintain narrative cohesion across the project.

the workshops

Multiple workshops were conducted by invitation and public open call using the Miro platform. Some were conducted one-on-one, and others with large groups.

Participants were presented with a backstory, and creative/reflective writing prompts.

Participants read their stories to each other and also contributed art and other inspiration.

Activities were semi-structured and allowed the workshop moderators to participate themselves and to adapt the format of the workshop in real time.

Stories are presented on our platform in their entirety with minimal copyediting to improve readability.

This project is also part of Laura Cechanowicz’s doctoral dissertation in interdisciplinary Media Arts + Practice at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. Our fictional scenario evolved through Laura’s worldbuilding and design research practice with the input of many thinkers around the world.

Our next live Critical Worlbuilding Workshop will be conducted at the 4th International Conference on Anticipation virtually on November 4, 2022. Register at http://anticipationconference.org/.
